The Algebraist

Iain M. Banks

Notes:

Great science fiction on a grand scale. Gives rare insight into possible life on gas-giants, for those interested.

Freakonomics A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything

Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner

Notes:

A fun read. Has a lot of interesting statistics that stick with you. Like that the legalizing of abortions probably led to a dramatic fall in crime rates 16 years later and that being a crack dealer pays below minimum wage.

The Girl Who Played with Fire

Stieg Larsson

Notes:

Even better than Dragon Tattoo, the first one. Amazing how Larsson throws all these plotlines up in the air and land them safefully just at the end. Lisbeth Salander is probably the coolest heroine I've come across. Shame on the publishers who are sitting on the third book - give it to me!

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Stieg Larsson

Notes:

Can't recommend it enough. A great book with enough twists and turns for three. You'll end up reading it in one go.

Fatherland

Robert Harris

Notes:

It might be a scary thought but I'd love to see the ultranazi Berlin of Fatherland. It's been 15 years since I read it and the image is still vivid in my mind.

Baudolino

Umberto Eco

Notes:

Good fun. Baudolino is either a chronic liar or Forrest Gump of the 13th century, rubbing shoulders with all the happening people and popping up in the it places of the time. And who would have imagined that the water in Seine in Paris was good to drink at that time?
